Valery S. Wittstein, 78, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026, at Waterbury Hospital- the same hospital where she was born on April 27, 1948, and where she dedicated many years of service as a medical coder.
Born in Waterbury, she was the daughter of the late George and Helen (Austin) Schmid. After graduating from high school, Valery followed her passion for art and spent some time studying at Paier College in Bridgeport, before returning to Waterbury and pursuing work in medical coding. She later married the love of her life, the late William Wittstein.
Valery will be remembered for her kind heart, artistic spirit, and deep love of animals. Above all, she cherished her role as a mother to her beloved son, Matt Kessler.
In honor of Valery's lifelong love for animals, memorial donations may be made to your local animal shelter or to the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, New York at nywolf.org.
All arrangements are private and at the convenience of the family.
Prospect Memorial/The Palmerie Family Funeral Home is honored to care for Valery and assist her family during their grief journey. Please leave your condolences, memories, and photos of Valery on her Tribute Wall on this website.
