We are sad to announce the passing of Siyoung Yu of Bethany, CT. He passed at age 73 on November 4, 2022, peacefully and with family by his side. Siyoung was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community member.
Siyoung was born in Seoul, South Korea and was the eldest of three sons. Siyoung was a man of strong intellect. He obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Seoul National University. After immigrating to the United States in 1976, he received his MBA and taught graduate students. He had a successful career of over forty years in the computer networking industry. Siyoung was an avid life-long learner, studying online theology at Yale Divinity School, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Union Theological Seminary. He enjoyed racquetball, golf, and singing in the church choir.
Siyoung was a devoted man of faith and loved serving his community. He served with Agape Church for the Homeless for twenty years, was a board member for the Overseas Ministries Study Center. Siyoung also served as President of the Seoul National University Alumni Association of Connecticut. He received numerous accolades for his service and outreach to the community: a feature in the New York Times (2008) about his work with Agape; awards from Governor Daniel Malloy (2011), and New Haven Mayors John DeStefano, Jr. (2012), and Toni Harp (2014); and the Presidential Award from Seoul National University (2021).
Siyoung is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Unchu; two sons, Samuel Yu and David Yu (Joan); and two grandchildren, Jacob and Harper.
