Ruth Holley Obituary

Mrs. Ruth Alice (Durette) Holley, age 88, of Naugatuck died peacefully on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at the Masonicare Health Care Facility in Wallingford.  Ruth is the survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, John S. Holley, Jr.  Born in Waterbury on December 7, 1935, Ruth was the daughter of the late Edward and Ethel (Hubbell) Durette.  She resided in Naugatuck for a large portion of her life. After graduating from Naugatuck High School in 1953, Ruth went on to earn her nursing degree from Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1956.  She was very proud of her nursing degree, and her career in that field.

She married the love of her life, John, at Blessed Sacrament Church on September 3, 1960, and lived for a time in California, where the first three of their five children were born, before moving back to Connecticut in 1964.  In 1971, they moved their family to their new home in Prospect, now with a total of five children, where they stayed for over thirty years, before moving back to Naugatuck.

Ruth was active in numerous groups and activities, including the Pioneer Squares square dancing club, and a parent’s support group based at St. Anthony’s Church in Prospect.  She worked for many years as a registered nurse, eventually accepting a position with the Naugatuck VNA, retiring from that position in 2000.  In 2000, she and John carried out a long-time dream, and built a log home in Reading, Vermont, and for many years enjoyed hosting family and friends, for various events, campfires, winter fun, sightseeing, foliage excursions, and other shenanigans around the firepit.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her son Mark E. Holley and his wife Shelley, her son James S. Holley, her daughter Christine Holley and her husband Robert Schaff, and her son Jeffrey J. Holley and his wife Anne Holley, as well as her six grandchildren:  Alexandra, Shane, Benjamin, Victoria, Thomas and Sarah. She is also survived by her very dear friend Carole Carter of Naugatuck.   She was predeceased by her son Michael J. Holley in 2010.

All services will be private.  Prospect Memorial/ The Palmerie Family Funeral Home is honored to be caring for the Holley family with services and throughout this difficult time.  Fond remembrances and your words of love and support can be shared on Ruth’s Tribute Wall at www.prospectmemorial.com
