Robert Smith Obituary

Robert G. Smith, of Bethany Connecticut, beloved husband of Irene (Smolenski) Smith, passed peacefully on June 24 2026 at the age of 95. Born in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the son of Elton  Fred and Louise (Hansen) Smith, he was raised in Meriden, Connecticut.

Bob graduated from Meriden High School in 1949 and went on to complete the program at Teachers College of Connecticut (now Central Connecticut State University). He taught for two years in Meriden before being drafted into the U.S. Army. During his service, Bob was assigned to Fort Devens, Massachusetts, where he worked in Army Intelligence. He was honorably discharged on July 6, 1953, and returned to Meriden to resume teaching. It was there he met Irene the art teacher, and they married a year later, in 1954.

Bob taught in both Meriden and Cheshire schools for 40 years, retiring in 1991. He had many interests, including genealogy, travel, art, and running—he even completed the Boston Marathon. Above all, Bob found his greatest joy in his family and in sharing whatever Irene was passionate about.

In addition to his beloved wife Irene, Bob leaves his children: Roy Smith and his longtime partner Louise Aldrich; and Eric Smith and his wife Lisa. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Corrinne Smith, Amanda Twohig and her husband Michael, and Kevin Smith; as well as his greatgrandchildren, August and Maeve Twohig.
