Richard G. “Dick” Johnson, 90, of Prospect, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. He was the loving husband of the late Joan (Ashborn) Johnson.
He was born in Waterbury on November 20, 1932, the son of the late Charles L. and Martha Johnson. Dick was a graduate of Hendriken Elementary School and Leavenworth High School.
Richard was a long-time member of Christ Episcopal Church in Waterbury, where he was baptized and married and served as the Senior Warden.
Richard was a U.S. Navy veteran and member of the Masonic Harmony Lodge. He was also a long-term member of the Prospect Fire Department, serving in several roles, including Assistant Chief. He proudly volunteered at Waterbury Hospital and led the Cub Scout Pack 27 and Boy Scout Pack 134. Richard was also an avid Red Sox fan.
Dick was employed early at Boiano's Service Station in Prospect as a mechanic before joining Southern New England Telephone Co in Waterbury as an Installer. He worked there for 31 years before retiring in 1987. Not one to sit still, Dick took what was supposed to be a part-time job with Dufour Bus Co. of Cheshire as a driver; he ended up working there for over fifteen years and was Dispatch Manager when he decided to retire again.
Richard is survived by his children Charles Johnson and his wife Migdalia of Surprise, AZ, David Johnson of Phoenix, AZ, and Jo-Ann Ford and her husband Jeremy of Waterbury. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Kelsey Johnson and Liam Ford, along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Joan of over 62 years of marriage and his brothers Robert McCullough, Gordon McCullough, and Frederick Schneider.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 27, 2023 from 5 to 7 pm at Prospect Memorial Funeral Home/ The Palmerie Family Funeral Home, 122 Waterbury Rd., Prospect, CT 06712. Military honors will take place after visitation at 7 PM. A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 2030 E Main St, Waterbury, CT 06705, on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 10 am. All those going to church are asked to meet directly there. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Please write online condolences for Richard on his Tribute Wall on this website.
