Melvin Jones

Melvin Jones was forged in love and born to Clay and Ola Jones (nee Hampton) on May 23, 1941 in Columbia, SC. As a young boy, Melvin had a penchant for math and loved his girls (mom Ola and sisters Annette and Caroline (all deceased). As a devoted brother, he made sure his sisters had every opportunity to pursue their dreams before reaching his own. On June 9, 1967, he would join in a partnership of 53 years with Joyce Kennedy from Spartanburg, SC and later give birth to their only daughter aptly named Melva after her father. Melvin always wanted a girl.

Professionally, Melvin was a lifelong math educator within the Waterbury School system at Wilby High School. He was known as the guy who would always stay after with students to make sure they were excelling. Being generous, kind of spirit and witty was who Melvin was known to be. He was a giver, a devoted husband and father who loved his girls (Joyce and Melva).

Melvin was called home to join the Lord on May 7, 2021 at 10:08 pm. He died peacefully knowing that he was loved, valued and adored and his girls would be alright including his daughter who was married on April 17, 2021. 

Melvin is survived by his life partner and wife of 53 years Joyce, their daughter Melva, his son-in-law Emmanuel, his nephews Rodney and Johnny Jr. Lewis, his nephew in love Dr. Joseph R. Johnson, Jr., his nieces Sheila Jones and Samantha Tennon, as well as his extended family, beloved students over the years, and his lifelong friends of 40+ years. A Graveside Service will be held at 9:30 am on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at Prospect Cemetery, Union City Road, Prospect. The Prospect Memorial Funeral Home is honored to be assisting the family with arrangements.
