John Chalmers, age 87, passed away peacefully April 4, 2026, at his home in Terryville leaving behind a legacy of love, music, craftsmanship, and friendship. Born in Ayrshire, Scotland, John carried his Scottish roots with pride throughout his life. John was the devoted and loving husband of 45 years to Karen (Kaminski) Chalmers, whose life was enriched by his joy-filled spirit and unwavering companionship. He shared a special bond with Ian Civitello who was like the son he never had. He is also survived by daughter Patricia Chalmers and his sister-in-law Exelda Messenger. He was predeceased by his parents, Archibault and Kathleen (Murray) Chalmers, his brother Turner Chalmers and his sister, Kathleen Pickens.
John was a proud veteran of the United States Army. He loved his country deeply and remained grateful for the opportunity to serve. John dedicated 50 years of his professional life to Northeast Utilities, where he worked as a respected project manager before retiring. Outside of his career, he was a man of many talents and passions. A gifted musician, John played guitar and sang with his band the “Minstrel Boys,” recording three albums and performing at venues including The Cave, The Barley Corn, and Block Island. He was also a talented craftsman who found joy in woodworking, carving, and leatherwork. John loved spending time on the golf course, relaxing at the beach, and especially cherished 25 years of vacations in Aruba.
A proud member of the St. Andrew’s Society of Connecticut, John valued tradition, camaraderie, and community. He also treasured his daily routines, including breakfast gatherings with friends at Dunkin’ and with the “Breakfast Club at Exelda’s where laughter and friendship were always on the menu.
Arrangements: Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 15, 2026 from 4pm to 7pm at Prospect Memorial/The Palmerie Family Funeral Home, 122 Waterbury Rd., Prospect. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, April 16, 2026 at 10am at St. Thomas Roman Catholic, 1 East Main St., Thomaston. Burial with Military Honors will immediately follow at Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury. All those planning to attend Mass are asked to meet directly at the church.
