James S. Whitaker Sr., 79, of Beacon Falls, passed away peacefully while surrounded by the love of his family on November 22, 2024, at Bridgeport Hospital. Jim was the beloved husband of Sandra (Thomas) Whitaker for 57 wonderful years. He was born on June 4, 1945, in Bridgeport, the son of the late Stanley and Martha (Beardsley) Whitaker.
Jim spent his working life as a talented Class A machinist. Knowing that some of his products were utilized in the aeronautical industry brought him a great sense of accomplishment. Jim was a man of diverse interests and talents. He earned the title “hot dog connoisseur,” and whenever he had the chance, you could find him at The Greek’s in Bridgeport or The Cricket in Stratford enjoying a hot dog. He truly enjoyed driving, and this joy led him on many road trips, including journeys across the United States. Jim liked visiting the casino, and when he was younger, he took up the hobby of oil painting. He was a lover of sports—golf, baseball, basketball, and football. You could expect to find him cheering on his favorite teams: the New York Giants, New York Yankees, and UConn Men’s basketball. Jim’s Dept. 56 Christmas Snow Village was a work of art, requiring planning and patience. But most of all, spending time with family brought Jim his greatest joy. Later in life, as grandchildren were born, for Pop Pop, the sun rose and set on each one.
Left to cherish Jim’s love and memory, beside his wife Sandi, are his children: Jennifer and her husband Robert Stow; his favorite son-in-law, James Jr. and his love Jeanette Risco; and Joan Whitaker, all of Beacon Falls. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Whitney and Jake Stow, Nathan Whitaker, and Tucker, his four-legged grand-dog. Jim leaves behind his sister Joan Tomas of Southington and his lifelong friends Barbara and Frank Philip of Storrs. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Jim was predeceased by his brother-in law, William Tomas, and his nephew, Kenneth Tomas.
