Douglas B. Merriman passed away on December 20, 2025 with his loving family by his side at the Vitas unit at St. Mary’s Hospital. Born July 17, 1935 in Waterbury, son of the late Roy and Margaret (Baker) Merriman. He attended Prospect schools and Crosby High School Class of 1954. He was the husband of the late Sylvia (Simonian) Merriman. Doug attended Northeastern University in Boston, Quinnipiac College, Southern Connecticut College Class of 1960 and earned advanced degrees from UCONN and SCSC.
He leaves a son Douglas A. Merriman, daughter M. Carrie Anderson and her husband John Kerner, brother John Merriman and his wife Carol, five grandchildren Heather Tiganella (James), Lauren Anderson, Andy Anderson and his fiancé Ashli, John and Samuel Merriman and his fiancé Kayla and great grandchildren James Gilbert Tiganella and Madeleine Sylvia Tiganella, all of Prospect. Besides his wife, Doug is preceded in death by his daughter in law Lisa, sister Susan Heston and brothers Roy Thomas Merriman who was killed in the Korean Conflict and Peter Merriman.
The Merriman family resided in Rockville, CT from 1960-1963 returning to Prospect where he built his first home and homes for his son and daughter that they still reside in today. Doug’s teaching career began in 1960 in East Windsor, 1961-1963 in Vernon and subsequently 29 years in the Cheshire Public Schools, retiring in 1992.
Doug’s avocation was his love of music and his violin. He was active with various musical groups, most importantly with the Waterbury Symphony. Doug was the youngest member of the Waterbury Symphony at that time, at only 16 years old. Politically Doug was a member of the Region 16 Board of Education from 1977- 1980, Prospect Town Councilman for 34 years, 10 years as the Chairman. He was an avid Yankees and UCONN Women’s basketball fan.
Arrangements: There are no calling hours and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Donations may be made to the Prospect Congregational Church or the Volunteer Fire Dept of Prospect.
