Loving Mother, Grandmother and Retired Teacher
Diane M. DeFazio, 75, of Prospect died peacefully at her home on Saturday, October 14, 2023 while surrounded by the love of her family. Diane was the widow of Martin DeFazio Sr. Born on November 27, 1947, she was the only daughter of the late Francis and Agnes (Smialek) Russo Sr.
As a Master’s degree prepared special education teacher for the Waterbury Public School System for more than a quarter century, Diane brought joy, understanding and a zest for knowledge to her students. She passed her love of learning and education on to her two sons who followed in her footsteps becoming teachers as well. The family summers were filled with great trips, time at the beach and exploring.
Diane was a genuine and loyal friend. Her “Coffee Group” has been sharing coffee, conversation, books and all the ups and downs of life for over 50 years. As a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, Diane supported and loved her church. When her health began declining in recent years, Diane faithfully watched and prayed with the mass on television.
Diane treasured her family. Her sons have many joyful memories of their childhood. When Diane became blessed with grandchildren her joys grew. “Babci” absolutely adored her grandchildren. She would do anything and everything for them, even making a birthday cake of meat! Her Polish heritage was carried on with her family, teaching them her signature dishes. Diane left a multitude of beautiful memories for her sons, grandchildren, family and friends. Her friendly smile and open heart will be cherished always.
Diane is survived by her sons Ronald and wife Alana of Prospect and Martin Jr and wife Danielle also of Prospect as well as her adoring grandchildren: Skylar, Jaxson, Jacob, Abigail, Thomas, Gianna and Fionna. Besides her beloved husband Marty, Diane is predeceased by her brothers Francis and Ronald Russo.
