Charles De La Vergne Obituary

Charles De La Vergne, 93, of Prospect died surrounded by the love and prayers of his family on Monday, April 29, 2024 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Charlie leaves his daughter, Cynthia Wilson of Prospect and his step daughter Linda Troski and husband Stan of Watertown, granddaughters Wendy (Rob) of Watertown and Crystal (Don) of Bristol and their families. He now joins his late wife Deborah (Bouldon) De La Vergne in heaven after missing her for the past 7 years. Born March 13, 1931 in Waterbury, the only child of the late Charles S. De La Vergne and Moira (Collett) De La Vergne.

After graduating from Sacred Heart High School, Charlie then went on to complete a diploma in carpentry from Horace Wilcox Technical School and was presented with the Outstanding Student Award in the Carpentry Course. He applied these skills to building his own house in Prospect where he has resided for the past 57 years.

Charlie proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. Initially stationed at Indian Town Gap Military Reservation. He served overseas in Germany before the completion of his service.

Charlie met and fell in love with his soulmate Debbie at her diner. They married in 1962 and spent the next 54 years in happiness. He was a gentle, caring man. After Debbie’s accident and subsequent disability, Charlie never missed a beat in caring for her and working as an operating engineer. He spent most of his career working for North Haven Construction and was a lifelong member of Local 478 IUOE. He also found the time to be a Volunteer firefighter with the Cheshire Heights Co 2 Volunteer Fire Department. He also belonged to Cheshire Heights Duckpin Bowling League. Charlie made many true and long-lasting friendships through the years.

The best day of Charlie’s life was the birth of his daughter Cynthia who as time went on became his best friend and sidekick. Charlie, Debbie, Cindy would camp together at their favorite property in Lake Adventure, Pennsylvania, then later in years enjoyed camping with Scott, Cindy’s late husband and his family. Charlie was known to sit so close to the campfire that he would ruin many pairs of slippers by melting the soles. Slippers became a traditional Christmas present. He was an avid UCONN Ladies Basketball fan. He enjoyed many wonderful meals, prepared by his daughter who loved to spoil him and of course lots of sweets, some of which were on the many road trips they took. Later in life, Charlie was a member of the Silver Sneakers, which he loved and made even more friends with his aids. More than anything, he was a family man. Charlie was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. His family was his greatest joy and blessing.

Left to cherish his love and memory is his daughter Cindy Wilson, loving caregiver over the past many years. Charlie will be missed by his great grandchildren Melanie, Samantha, Landon and Maci. Besides his wife, Charlie is predeceased by his son in law Scott Wilson.
