Bruce Hescock Obituary

Bruce P. Hescock, beloved husband of Janet (Beaudoin) Hescock of Bethany, passed away after a long illness on February 28, 2024 at home with his family by his side. Born in Rochester, New Hampshire on August 24, 1933, he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Putnam) and John Hescock.

Following his high school graduation, he attended Boston University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Education. A tremendous athlete, he set many records in pole vault and high jump competitions during his years at BU and was the IC4A pole vault champion. Bruce was inducted into the BU Hall of Fame in 1981 for his achievements in track and field and the Rochester NH Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. While at BU he also achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and, after graduating, committed to serve his country as a pilot in the Strategic Air Command. After completing his service to his country, he accepted a coaching position at Dartmouth College and subsequently at Yale University. During his 40s and 50s Bruce competed in the Masters Decathlon Tournaments, setting records in 1974 and 1979. In 1979 he won every event in the 40-45 age group. Bruce was an active lifelong member of the Bethany Lions Club, holding the position of President in 1990 and again in 1997. A true Yankee jack of all trades and always willing to help those in need, he eventually left track and field and spent many years working on his own as carpenter, often using his skills to help those in need and eventually added tree work to his resume. In his spare time, he enjoyed the tranquility of gardening and fishing and spending time with his wife and family.

In addition to his wife Janet of 68 years, Bruce is survived by his 3 children: Robyn Hescock, Tammy Hescock and her significant other Al Carlson, Bruce Hescock and his wife Audry Hescock, his 8 grandchildren: Kyle Matthews and his wife Laura Clayman, Brian Matthews, Scott Matthews, Morgan Hescock, Shannon Hescock, Isabella Hescock, Selena Hescock, Roman Hescock, his 2 great-grandchildren: Elan and Talia Matthews, and his sister-in-law Linda Hescock. He is predeceased by his sister Caroline Johnson and his brother John Hescock.
