Bernard Lewis Markey

Bernard Lewis Markey, 85, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on January 18, 1941, in Houlton, Maine, Bernard lived a life defined by faith, family, service, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys that brought people together. At the time of his passing, he resided in Port St. Lucie, Florida, with his beloved wife, Linda.

Bernard was a proud veteran who served his country as a paratrooper in the United States Army and completed jumps with the famed 101st Airborne. He carried tremendous pride in his military service throughout his life. With characteristic humor and courage, he often referred to his passing as his "last jump."

A man of many passions, Bernard loved NASCAR and could often be found talking about races or cheering on his favorite drivers. He treasured his bright blue Chevrolet SSR truck, taking great pride in driving it, maintaining it, and showing it off to family and friends. Gifted with his hands, Bernard also enjoyed whittling and woodcarving, creating pieces that reflected both his patience and creativity.

His faith was an important part of his life. As a devoted member of Celebrate Recovery, Bernard found strength in fellowship and service to others. Each year, on the first Sunday of August, he made a special pilgrimage to New Brunswick, Canada, to attend a cherished annual sermon. He looked forward to the journey every year and delighted in bringing different family members along, sharing with them the beauty, inspiration, and sense of wonder he found in that miraculous place.

Above all else, Bernard was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Linda (Graham) Markey; and his children: Robert Clark and his wife Theresa, Tammy Holland and her husband John, Tracy Osteyee and her husband Douglas, Bernard Lavorgna and his wife Deborah, and daughters Kim and Koral. He is also survived by his brother, Dave Markey and his wife Joyce; his sister, Marie McDonald and her husband Paul; his grandchildren: Jodi Stewart, Jamie Foster, Tiffani Soliz, Brittani Carmona, Rachael Blakeslee, Kaitlyn Wojnagi, Douglas Osteyee Jr., Jessica Morrell, Kayla Lavorgna, and Courtney Lavorgna; 10 great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

After a lifetime of faithful service, loving devotion, and countless adventures, he has completed his final jump and rests in peace.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 122 Waterbury Road, Prospect, Connecticut.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church, 4 Union City Road, Prospect, Connecticut. Interment of Bernard's ashes at St. James Cemetery will immediately follow the Mass.
