Agnes Russell Obituary

Agnes C. Russell, 90, of Bethany, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 27, 2023. Agnes was born December 19, 1932, a daughter to the late James and Beatrice (Hay) Cox.

Agnes retired from Amity Middle School where she worked as a secretary for more than 30 years. She was an active member of the Bethany Historical Society where she served as treasurer for some time. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society,  the DAR  and formerly danced as a Blossom Tapper.

Agnes was devoted to her family. They were the most important aspect of her life. She always made it a point to organize and host family gatherings and stressed the importance of the family unit. She also cherished her many friends.   She will be remembered for always lending a helping hand to anyone in need.

Agnes was a social butterfly who lived life to the fullest. She was an avid bowler and tap dancer.  She was a crafty woman who loved to knit, crochet and sew.  She made outfits for the Historical Society, Blossom Tappers and many wedding dresses for family and friends.  Agnes loved to cook and bake and share her talents with others.  She baked and decorated many beautiful wedding cakes, provided treats for bake sales and cooked lasagne and corned beef dinners for countless banquet dinners for the Bethany Historical Society. She was a fan of Big Band, Frank Sinatra, country and 40’s music.  Agnes enjoyed traveling and even drove cross country with friends visiting all the US states.  She traveled to South Dakota to help build homes on a Native American Reservation. She loved her travels to Scotland, England and Ireland as she was very proud of her Irish ancestry. She liked birds and loved butterflies, roses, begonias and angel figurines.  She will be surely missed by all those who got the wonderful opportunity to meet her.

Agnes leaves behind her children Merritt Jr. (Jeryle) Russell of Canajoharie, NY and Eric Sr. (Sharon) Russell Sr. of Bethany, CT.  She also leaves her grandchildren: Carrie (Brian) Ludwiczak of Welford, SC, Annmarie Russell of Naugatuck, CT, Alissia (Mike) Haig of Rotterdam, NY, Gary Jr. (Amber) Russell of Thomaston, CT, Holly (Bobby) Pierce of Dolgeville, NY, Eric Jr. (Alexandra) Russell of Bethany, CT, Kevin (Sarah) Russell of Bethany, CT, 12 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
